The Craft of Fiction (BASIC)
In this self-paced workshop, we cover the fundamental building blocks of writing fiction over 6 sessions. Suitable for beginning and intermediate writers-- and anyone looking for a fresh start.
This is a self-paced workshop, focusing on the elements of writing fiction. Each session's video introduces a particular element of writing craft, focusing on fiction but usually open to being interpreted in other genres as well. Every video ends with one or several writing prompts, which use the craft elements under discussion, but which also provide a launching pad for generating new stories. The structure and style of this workshop is informed by the work of Cassandra Medley (The Writer’s Gym), Pat Schneider (the Amherst Writers and Artists Method), and Peter Elbow (Writing With Power). This online workshop gives you access to all of the material I use in my regular workshop, and it is available year-round. However, if you would also like live instruction, discussion forums, writing community, and manuscript critique, please sign up to my mailing list so you hear about the next time I offer the "Plus" version of my writing course. Please note that if you have already signed up for the Creative Writing Across Genres workshop, you should skip this one as it will use much of the same material
Session 1: The Heart of Your Story
Session 2: Story People
Session 3: Scenes and Summaries
Session 4: Making it concrete
Session 5: Writing Dialogue
Session 6: Tying it all together with a story arc
I'd love to hear from you!
A writer is someone who writes. Write with us. Voila: You are a writer.
Absolutely not. The workshop has been the beginning of many of my participants' writing journeys, some of whom have since gone on to publish, others among whom have simply come to regard it as a cherished hobby or means of catharsis. The prompts will ease you into writing, and you will learn many new skills along the way.
I can help you become a better writer and editor of your work, which is, of course, a big part of getting published. I am also happy to point you to publishing opportunities that I know of, or to connect you with people I know. I do not, however, have contacts within the publishing industry, nor do I specifically edit manuscripts for publication.
Send me an email (through the "Contact" link above), telling me a little more about yourself, why you want to do this course, and your current circumstances. I offer up to 20% of my seats at a subsidised rate, based on financial need, and I will do my best to accommodate you.
I don’t believe you. Come join us. You’ll be surprised.
