Welcome

Journaling for Clarity, Curiosity, and Courage (Basic)

I'm so excited to introduce this course that brings together my many years teaching writing and my even more years working in the development sector, particularly in using the arts for dialogue and transformation.

In addition to my own experiences, this course is informed by the Amherst Writers' Method, Liz Lerman's work on offering feedback to works of art, Peter Elbow's writing pedagogy, and Narrative Therapy approaches. This is primarily a generative writing course, which means that we will spend much more time writing and reading than we will on craft or critique.

In the basic version of the course, you will have unlimited access to all recordings, writing prompts, and readings for you to work through at your own pace and convenience. You will have access to all course materials for 180 days from your date of enrolment.

In case you would like more community and ongoing support as you work through this course, consider enrolling in the Plus version instead, where you will also have access to community discussion forums, live video conferences, ongoing feedback and bonus prompts. .

There are no prerequisites for this course as it is designed to work for writers across levels. Regardless of where you begin, our goal is for you to leave surer in your voice, curious-er about the world, and braver in your writing.

FAQ

  • What is the difference between the Basic and the Plus versions?

The Basic version of this course gives you access to 12 audio/ video recordings, writing prompts, and associated readings that you can do on your on time. The Plus version has all of these, plus a weekly 90 minute video conference call each week for 12 weeks, ongoing support and feedback through the week via class discussion forums, the experience of learning and growing together with a community of writers, as well as bonus writing prompts and readings throughout the course. The Plus version is also capped at 12 participants, while the Basic version has no upper limit on number of participants.

  • Is this is a course for beginners or advanced writers?

This is a course for anyone who would like to get into a regular writing practice, become more attentive and more courageous as a writer (and as a person!), and / or use the journal as a tool for emotional health, self reflection, and personal growth. The course draws upon my many years of teaching writing as well as my many years working in the development sector and mental health spaces, and it is intentionally designed to serve as both, a foundation for your writing practice, and a tool for general well-being and personal growth. As such, it has no distinctions for beginners or advanced writers.

  • Will you be teaching the Craft of Writing?

Not primarily. Some craft questions will likely come up and get addressed during the live conferences in the Plus section, but this is primarily a generative writing course, aimed at getting you to write with curiosity and courage. The teaching of craft will therefore not be a core feature of this course, nor will manuscript critique (if you're looking for those, I recommend my Creative Writing Across Genres workshop instead). However, the practice of writing regularly and receiving ongoing feedback will certainly help your craft even if that is not at the core of our conversations in this course. ,

TESTIMONIALS

Writing to Heal

Chris Kurian, Public Health Researcher and Founder, Fork Songs

I wanted to use writing as a way of working through memory and healing trauma, while also having concrete written outputs that could make their way into a book. Finding a writing mentor in Aditi, with an orientation towards writing as a means of healing, was an enabling experience. Her one on one sessions were very useful to me, both in breaking down an overwhelming amount of information into smaller workable parts and also in honing my writing craft.

Truth with Tender Fierceness

Kumud Bhansali, PhD Scholar, South Asian University

Since 2012, I have done four writing workshops and a writing retreat with Aditi, and they have meant different things at different points in my writing journey: from learning to attune myself to other people’s voices to gathering the courage to write my truth with tender fierceness. As a facilitator, Aditi allows your writerly voice to unfold at its own pace and tends to it with gentle care. Through her workshops, I got to grow not only as an individual but also found a community, where we became quite interested (and invested) in each other’s writing projects; some of my greatest friendships have also grown out of her workshops.

The Courage to Use My Own Voice

Kuhu Joshi, Poet and Researcher

Aditi’s workshops gave me the most essential ingredient to write with: the courage to use my own voice. I found self-belief in a community where everyone felt safe, heard and seen. And the teaching of craft was blended in so brilliantly, sometimes I would look down at my notebook and think, oh, I just used all these metaphors, oh, I just created this quirky character! It really changed my life. I’ve grown braver, kinder and more attentive, my poems are getting published, I was long listed for the TOTO award, and even admitted to the MFA program at Sarah Lawrence in New York: all things I didn’t imagine were possible for me a year ago when I had completely lost my self-esteem and identity.

A Safe, Empowering Space

Rachna Sharma, Regional English Language Specialist, US Embassy

Aditi’s writing classes have really pushed me to experiment with my own writing, develop an insight into the craft, and most importantly, have fun. The classes work on multiple levels with carefully curated stages, and the bedrock of her sessions is the organic way in which she turns total strangers into a collaborative group by creating a safe, non-judgmental space that encourages mutual respect and uninhibited expression. Teaching with deep insight and passion, Aditi at once inspires and empowers each participant in her class to continue on their own unique writing journey.
